Steelers Get An Honest Explanation From The NFL For Grueling Schedule: 'Something They’ll Take A Look At In The Future'
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers' official schedule for the 2024 season was unveiled on Wednesday, marking a moment of heightened anticipation and excitement, a sentiment echoed across the football community each year. However, the reaction among Steeler Nation was tinged with disappointment and frustration over the NFL's scheduling decisions.

The schedule reveals that the Steelers won't enjoy the advantage of a home game until Week 3. More critically, their first AFC North matchup is delayed until Week 11, an unusual setup that has sparked considerable debate. From Week 11 through Week 18, the Steelers face a daunting sequence of games against their division rivals.

They are slated to play the Baltimore Ravens twice, and similarly, they will meet the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals two times each during that brutal stretch. This concentration of key divisional games towards the season's end could pose significant challenges, adding to the already competitive nature of the AFC North.

The NFL's scheduling strategy, particularly its implications for the Steelers, was further elaborated by ESPN's Brooke Pryor, who shared insights on social media on Thursday. Pryor provided a deeper look into the league's decision-making process, aiming to offer Steelers fans some clarity on why their team faces such a tough schedule in the latter part of the year.

This scheduling decision undoubtedly intensifies the upcoming season, preparing the stage for a series of pivotal matchups for the Steelers. One of the most significant challenges will emerge around the holidays. The Steelers are set to face the Ravens, followed swiftly by a showdown against the reigning back-to-back Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, on Christmas Day. This quick turnaround to such a high-profile game, especially during a festive period, adds an extra layer of complexity and excitement to their season.

Mike North explained that it was not the intention to have the Steelers begin their divisional play so late in the season; it was simply how the scheduling unfolded. As Pryor highlighted in her social media update, the NFL is likening the Steelers' 2024 schedule to the college basketball season.

However, the comparison falls short because playing in the NFL, especially towards the year's end, is significantly more demanding. By this stage, teams are typically battling injuries and fatigue, making it particularly challenging to face all divisional games in quick succession.

Despite these challenges, the Steelers' situation is set to serve as a crucial learning opportunity for the NFL. The league plans to use the insights gained from the pitfalls of this scheduling process to develop more balanced and equitable schedules in the future.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Won't Have To Search To Be Uncomfortable In 2024

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has often emphasized his ability to thrive under pressure, even going so far as to seek out uncomfortable situations. This inclination was highlighted by former Steelers safety and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark on Get Up on Thursday, noting that in 2024, Tomlin won't need to look far for challenges—the NFL has ensured they're on his doorstep.

Tomlin's tenure has been impressive, maintaining a record devoid of losing seasons over his 17 years as head coach. However, despite this consistent performance, the Steelers haven't secured a playoff victory since the 2016 season. This has left fans yearning for more than just above-average results and eager for a deep Super Bowl run. The 2024 season promises to be particularly demanding, presenting Tomlin with the dual challenges of sustaining his non-losing streak and steering the team towards playoff success.
